My Spanish parents were refugees from the Spanish civil war settling in London. Shortly after my father’s death, my mother returned to her native Valencia in 2005, whilst us three brothers remained in the UK. Sadly she developed Alzheimer’s and my brothers and I agree we needed to secure Power of Attorney. The Alzheimer’s society in Valencia put us in touch with America Brel, a local English speaking solicitor. She has a one person legal practice. 

She took us though the process attending the local court hearing where mother was assessed and I was granted this power.  At all times we were reassured of her total command of the legalities. She is very experienced in law having written a number of text book. She lectures law most weeks at the local university and represents judges and notaries in Valencia. 

America also undertook numerous legal processes in the management of family affairs ranging from sorting out complex inheritance issues, the purchase, sale and valuation of properties, regularly attending the local Notary for the legal hearings with whom she has an excellent relationship. She gave us sound advice over inheritance, income taxes and used her initiative several times including contacting our bank where necessary.

 In our dealings over the past 10 Years, we have had numerous meetings. America has been prompt with her actions, courteous and helpful. She is very approachable, supportive and understanding, going the extra ‘mile’ when necessary often anticipating what has needed to be done and using her own initiative. An example being offering to attend a family conference here in London. She has a sharp sense of humour.

 We’ve recommended her to family and friends alike who have also been pleased with her work.
